Week 1
This module is centred around working with the universities drama department to create an animated backdrop sequence for them to use alongside their performance from which they plan to use on their tour of their adaptation of: 'Haroun and the sea of stories' by Salman Rushdie.
Before beginning work on concept design and other such areas, we will have to have a meeting with the Drama students as to what their vision is for the backdrop.
While waiting for our meeting with the Drama department, we had a look over the plot summary and began initial idea grabbing from our own interpretations of the play, to suggest at the meeting.
One of the guidelines we were given right away was that the animation would be presented through 3 circular windows. This to me seemed like a large restriction to our animating capabilities. as it would cut out large areas of the animation. Hopefully this will push us to work outside of our comfort zones and find creative ways around this limitation.
We decided that seeing the play was split up into different sections we would split the animation team into small groups to tackle certain areas of each part. We then did research into what kind of style we wanted to go with. We decided that we all liked the idea of a digital version of a paper cut style. Below is a mood board of images we put together in response to this style. For the most part we liked the idea of silhouettes on top of a coloured of brighter background.
We will discuss our ideas with the clients (drama students) at our meeting with them next week and will help us grasp a firmer understanding of what is wanted from us, so we can officially start production.
